What’s the story behind VanDusen Botanical Garden?
VanDusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver began as a vision to transform a portion of the city’s historic forest into a public space dedicated to plant conservation, education and beauty; the site was originally part of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples’ traditional territory and later included nursery operations and private estates before the City of Vancouver acquired the land in the mid-20th century. Designed in the late 1970s by landscape architect Don Vaughan in collaboration with the Vancouver Park Board and community groups, the 55-acre garden opened in 1975 and has since grown into a living museum that showcases plants from temperate regions around the world, supports research and conservation initiatives, hosts seasonal displays and events, and provides a serene urban refuge that reflects both horticultural innovation and the region’s natural heritage.
